In existentialist thinking, there is an agreement that being human means being unfinished and under construction. The reason for this is that as humans, we will never completely arrive at being who we are. The Danish philosopher Kierkegaard formulated this in the following way:

Man is a synthesis of the infinite and the finite, of the temporal and the eternal, of freedom and necessity, in short it is a synthesis. A synthesis is a relation between two factors. So regarded, man is not yet a self.

(Kierkegaard, 1849/1941)
